CPC MP Rathgeber Resigns after colleagues vote to gut bureaucrat pay accountability bill

Author: Nick Bergamini 2013/06/05

Brent Rathgeber, MP for Edmonton-St. Albert has resigned from the Conservative caucus after his colleagues unanimously voted to gut his private members bill, Bill C-461, which would have disclosed the salaries of federal bureaucrats.

The CTF have been strong supporters of Mr. Rathgeber's bill, which would identify the names of federal government employees making at least $188,000 a year. But at the House of Commons committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, a government amendment was passed that raised the threshold to $329,000, taking the teeth out of the bill.

Following the vote, the MP tweeted: "My decision to resign from the CPC Caucus is because of the Government's lack of commitment to transparency and open government."
